Skelmersdale Tourist Guide

Skelmersdale

Lying on high ground on the River Tawd, Skelmersdale is often thought of as being part of Liverpool due to being just under 13 miles away from the city, however Skelmersdale is actually situated in West Lancashire. It has a population of around 40,000 people and is fondly known by locals as Skem. In 2006 it underwent a revamp headed by Wayne Hemmingway and partnered English Partnerships with the North West Regional Development Agency. The redesign concentrated on evening commerce and entertainment for the town. The biggest employers in the area are the Co Operative Bank however Nestle and Walkers also have links to the town. There is a sense of community in Skelmersdale with local people showing big support for local teams including the local football and cricket teams and even the prize winning Skelmersdale brass band.
